I’m working in a distance education environment so it is a bit different to an environment where you have the opportunity for day to day face to face interaction. I try to stay within the tools provided by our online learning platform (Janison toolbox).

In the age of the www there is an obvious tension between the school providing a safe (world like) environment in which to experiment and learn verses involving the students in the actual world.

Our basic modus operandi at the moment is to present stimulus material to the students. They respond to this material in their blogs and on discussion boards. Then engage in dialogue with other class members based upon their responses to the stimulus material.

Hi Darrell and others,
I believe that using a 'blended' approach such as you describe Darrell is a great model to follow. Using the tools as required according to the tasks and learning experiences that the learning organisation is encouraging, is the pedagogical approach. What are the issues? How can Web 2.0 tools assist or create solutions. e.g. Distance education practices at Latrobe University include the use of Blackboard/Vista, Elluminate and Blogs.

How about Google Docs, the Zoho suite, bubbl.us, Picnik, splashup - great tools for the classroom!

my favourite application is tiddlywiki - www.tiddlywiki.com -an agile & versatile freestanding open source wiki platform powered by a javascript engine, with hundreds of free 3rd party javascript plugins/macros.

i had discovered tiddlywiki on a moodle list, while trying in vain to get moodle's wiki working

since discovered tiddlywiki, i have been working extensively with it - with thehelp ofa wonderful tiddlywiki googlegroup and seems wonderfully well-suited to classroom, e.g.each student / group of students can download their own copy of a curriculum, and use the file to record their comments and notes and independent findings, etc.,and can customize the appearance/ display of their workbook, and reorganize the information with the use of plugins

you can find links to some examples of how i have beenusing tiddlywiki at http://www.congo-education.net or at http://habitat.igc.org/
