Blocks and Boosters: Five ways to get started with Web 2.0 today!
Jul 14 2008, 6:23 AM EDT | Post edited: Jul 14 2008, 6:23 AM EDT
This is the place where you can ask questions of the presenters before, during and after the Elluminate Live events.

What's blocked? What's barred? at your place? How can you boost or enable inspiration for others to use Web 2.0 tools? What are your strategies for using Web 2.0 tools outside of the box?

Come on in - introduce yourself - answer a question or two - make some comments about session 3 day 2 of the Knowledge Bank Conference 2008.

Hi there,
Marlene Manto here from Adelaide in SA. Recently, I got back from 10 weeks of leave to find that the local 'powers that be' had opened up Facebook, e-Bay...and a host of other sites! I think things are slowly changing but I'd be the first to agree that this is not fast enough in some corners of the country. Many people seem to focus on the negative though...what is blocked and barred...however I think the answer is to work around these barricades while lobbying for change by explaining (not whinging about) the need for these tools for education.

What happened here was that (with Facebook for instance) an invitation was sent out to practitioners asking them to email back with their reasons for wanting it opened, and why they felt it was important. Responses were put together in a proposal which was then progressed up the lines of authority. Took some time but it was the right way to go and all staff and students now have access to Facebook through the firewall.

Slowly, slowly is frustrating at times, but 'you don't catch flies with vinegar'. [grin]

What do others think? Anybody have similar experiences?

Hi Marlene, great to see you here. What a major coup for TAFE SA - Facebook access through the firewall - sounds like something from Alice through the looking glass! :-)
One of our major challenges in Victoria has been enabling access to virtual classrooms through network ports. We are approaching that in a variety of ways - not the least of which is explaining to the IT staff and to senior executives the value and benefits of the use of such tools in reducing expenses for students who are unable to afford to travel in to TAFE everyday due to escalating petrol costs.

Several TAFEs in Victoria have successfully been using virtual classrooms and they now provide great models to emulate and to learn from.

1. Join a social networking group eg www.classroom20.com
2. Read other educationalists blogs
3. Commence a blog
4. Open a http://del.icio.us account
5. Lurk wherever you can online and read and look at what is happening.

I guess I'm lucky - at the personal level I don;t have a problem with stuff being blocked because I'm outside the large organisations, security paranoia... and to be fair, a proportion of educational organisations' concerns are validated in terms of having safe places for young people to interact. Where I do have problems in when my clients and my learners are within organisations that have blocks in place and helping them to find a way through the firewall to us becomes a major exercise in diplomacy and persuasion.
Unfortunately much of the blocking policy is drafted by technical heads as against education heads and their understanding of what and why we need to use some of the tools of W2.0 is zilch.
I'm with Marlene - briefing papers, quick guides to safe access etc sent up the line with persuasive arguments is far better than steam and demands. Honey is the best!!!

Hi Chris,

I am from queensland and find a lot of web 2.0 sites blocked. Is it because it requires the storage of information and images on a remote server? There is some amazing things to use that enhance pedagogy and learning but not much of it I find accessible.

I have heard through the grapevine the EQ may be using elluminate, is this true? I would love to trial it or get involved somehow.

Regards,

Bob Bartley (Taranganba State School)

Hi Bob
Grapevines are wonderful aren't they - it's amazing how they manage to pass along the unofficial top secret stuff. :) Can oyu see me smiling and winking!!! ;)

There are a lot of websites blocked in Qld, particularly in the government network. Two reasons for this I believe, and an underlying issue.
1. Those responsible for the Qld government network have issues and concerns about the possibility of downloaded video and sound using expensive bandwidth and bringing in viruses. Bandwidth and data dowloads cost. Valid concerns.
2. The relevant departments' IT people are concerned about child safety and cyber safety and are afraid that some of the sites that use W2.0 technologies are unsafe places and contain inappropriate materials. So they are. Also a valid concern.

The underlying issue is the understanding between educators and those responsible for Whole of Government IT. The WOG IT is in the hands of non-educators and it is hard for them to make judgements about what will or will not be blocked without good guidance - which is also thin on the ground. They need to know how teachers use the sites, how they safeguard their students and what the value is to education.
What we need to be careful of is that we are not so enamoured of the technology that we lose sight of what we are trying to do.
Target the learning carefully. Explain what sites you want to use and why they are safe for the child and the system and persuade them up the line of the value and eventually we will gain access to what we need. Target the learning!!!! Not the technology.

Hello everyone. I am an Ultranet coach in the Echuca area. It seems that Netspace blocks more sites than Editure.

Recently we conducted a professional development session with principals. We used Glogster (www.glogster.com/edu) and Voicethread (http://voicehtread.com/). While the main purpose of the activity was to share strategies on how to implement the 1:1 laptop pilot next year, the glog was an easy way for them to share their ideas and the Voicethread was used for them to give us feedback on the session. However, principals were keen to have these tools used in their schools so there have been a lot of requests to unblock these sites recently!

We set up a Ning (www.ning.com/) to support teachers in the 1:1 laptop pilot next year, but as Netspace has blocked Nings and they are a large Internet provider across our region, we may have to think of an alternative. Pity, as it would have been the ideal tool to use in this situation...

Another problem we have encountered are computer technicians and coordinators. After polite requests they still refuse to unblock some sites as they say it will increase Internet use and result in budget blowouts. I was recently told not to encourage the use of Google Docs for this reason.

I really hope that the students in the 1:1 laptop pilot get to use their computer for more than word processing and Internet research. I hope that there soon will be more acceptance of web2.0 tools for communication and collaboration in education.
