Events details are displayed at the Knowledge Bank Online Events blog page for your convenience, where you can register, practice and join in any of the online events.

This wiki will provide you with opportunities to share ideas, feedback and promotion of your experiences with our online events.

The Knowledge Bank Online Events Conference 2008, scheduled for July 22 - 23, is ready for your registrations. We invite you to share your comments about the six sessions in the special pages provided for each one. You can select those from the left navigation bar under Conference 2008.

Each of the Program Events listed below and in the left Navigation bar, have their own page for your collaboration. Select the one you're interested in and feel free to add input below what is already in place. Do this by clicking on the EasyEdit icon at the top of each page and click Save when finished. Note: each page will be edited and managed during the conference by event facilitators.

A Live Blog will feature at the top of each session page; you can join in with those by visiting that page selecting the Live Blog icon. Each blog will commence at the time displayed on the icon and you can add a reminder to your calendar from there.

There is also a separate discussion forum topic for each presentation where you may wish to pose a question for the presenter or to make some comments about the presentation. You will find each of these topics in the Discussion Forum located in the top Navigation bar. To contribute to the Discussion Forum topics you will need to join this free wiki site.

Web 2.0 Collaboration in the LOTE Classroom

An increase in the use of ICT as a powerful learning tool in the LOTE classroom has been a focus at Fairhills High School over recent times. With some ground work begun last year, the passionate and dynamic team of LOTE teachers have hit the ground running in 2008 and pushed the boundaries of current thinking around ICT and its place in the classroom. With the installation of IWBs into two of the LOTE rooms we began to see a shift in the way teachers were interacting with students and a massive increase in the particpation of students in the classroom. As teachers created online games and used programs like Easiteach to develop highly interactive, ICT rich learning experiences for their students, their understanding of the power and possibilities of Web 2.0 tools grew rapidly. The two tools we have been making most use of are :

These tools have been used in a number of different ways by different teachers. Some have simply used them as a teaching tool within the traditional classrom, for examples recording student oral presentations using voicethread. Some use them to encourage cooperative learning in the classroom. Others have begun to build their courses around them, building virtual classrooms for their students to collaborate and get into some www learning.... whatever, wherever, whenever.

This session takes us through some examples of the Virtual Classroom style application of the Web 2.0 tools wikispaces and voicethread.

Year 11 students using wikis and voicethread to workup, discuss and storyboard a collaborative film project for German class. The regular teacher is contributing heavily, despite the fact she is on long service leave in Germany!!!

Year 12 Japanese students working with the language assistant to improve their pronunciation and link with native speaking “experts” for their detailed study outcome.

In a non-LOTE example, an English teacher attempting to get her students reflecting and writing about themselves developed a myspace styled wiki in which students posted songs they liked, images of friends and interests and videos

This provides links and ideas for a range of Web 2.0 tools, put together by a team from the Knox Secondary Learning Community.

Some of the benefits we have seen through our use these tools have included:

Visibility of the thinking of other students .... challenging without pressure

Getting help at home - particularly useful in LOTE

We are just beginning our journey into the use of Web 2.0 tools. Weare really keen to keep moving forward and have plans to develop the following projects:

Voicethread…

Sister Schools and LOTE

We are planning to put together voicethreads with photos of our school and have our junior German and Japanese students make comments about the pictures in the LOTE language. Students from our sister schools in Germany and Japan will then ask questions and make comments in English for our students to listen to and make replies.... both groups of students will therefore be contributing to the voicethread in their LOTE.

Japanese Study Tours

Develop a connection between the partner school in Victoria, prior to going on the tour. And to communicate and discuss issues of concern with the organisation in Japan..... get to know the host families.... that sort of thing.... and then use it to keep a track of the tour.... maybe even having kids back at school monitoring what we are doing...???

Elluminate…

VCE cross school collaboration ....

Using online, realtime, collaboration with elluminate.... holding the class with the teacher "up front" then putting the students into breakout rooms in pairs so they can discuss or work on vocab, then come back and share with the group

Linking with international native speakers and experts

Linking with experts and "natives" for the detailed study online. Asking questions, sharing info, and going into further detail.

And who knows what is around the corner….?
